Focus turns to Charleston

Published on April 10th, 2014

Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week kicks off in earnest on Friday, with 271 boats expected on April 11-13, making it the largest regatta of its kind in the entire Western Hemisphere. Celebrating its 19th edition, teams will be representing the U.S. and the UK, Brazil, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Bermuda, Canada and the Bahamas.

The local weather in Charleston, SC appears to be shaping up nicely. “This is the best weather we’ve had for this regatta in four years,” observed News Channel 2 meteorologist Josh Mather.

Competition includes boats from 21 feet to several over 50 feet. Among the highlights are the four-boat High Performance Rule class, with three Carkeek 40s and the 47-foot Grunddoom participating in its first regatta (it was launched in December).
