Final test of the High School season
Published on May 20th, 2014
The Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) will be holding the final High School Championship of the sailing season with the Baker Team Race Championship in Seabrook, TX. Twelve schools will compete for the title at Lakewood Yacht Club on May 24-25.
If the High School Mallory Doublehanded Championship (May 10-11) was any indicator, the Baker will be equally as exciting. The Mallory was won on the last race with merely 2 feet to determine the winner. Both Mallory champions Point Loma High School and second place St. George’s School will be back at the Baker as well as third place finisher Shorecrest Preparatory.
The Baker Trophy, dedicated in 1989, will determine the best of team racing schools among the 7 Districts across the USA. The following schools have won their District qualifiers to represent their respective Districts at the National Championship:
Northwest (1): Bainbridge High School (Bainbridge Island, WA)
Pacific Coast (3): Newport Harbor HS (Newport Beach, CA; Point Loma HS (San Diego, CA); Corona del Mar HS (Newport Beach, CA)
New England (2):- St. Georges School (Middletown, RI); Cape Cod Academy (Osterville, MA)
Mid Atlantic (2): Annapolis HS (Annapolis, MD); Broadneck High School (Annapolis, MD).
South Atlantic (2): St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL); Shorecrest Preparatory School (St. Petersburg, FL)
Midwest (1): Loyola Academy (Wilmette, IL)
Southeast (1): Jesuit High School (New Orleans, LA)
The ISSA is organized to encourage and promote the sport of sailing and sailboat racing among high schools. Organized into 7 Districts, over 430 schools compete annually in events across the country. ISSA holds annual National championships in singlehanded, double handed and team racing to determine the year’s best sailors while each District holds numerous events throughout the season.
