ScottAllanAnnapolis, Maryland (July 10, 2014) – Local sailmaker Scott Allan of Scott Allan Sailing Services and Scott Allan Sailmakers, Inc. has joined North Sails. Scott is returning to his sailmaking roots after working for one of Lowell North’s original ‘tigers’, Peter Barrett, while attending the University of Southern California in the early 1970s. Scott will be a sales representative and sail care consultant at North Sails effective immediately. His sail loft at 108 Severn Avenue, Annapolis, MD, which first opened in 1977, will stay open for 4-6 weeks during the transition process.

“North Sails is always trying to expand our knowledgebase and experience and Scott Allan brings both to the table,” said Ken Read, President of North Sails Group. “Not only is Scott an excellent sailor and sailmaker, but he has a loyal following because of his approachable personality and his experience both on the racecourse and off,” said Read. “We look forward to working with Scott and welcoming his clients and I’m confident he’s a great fit for North Sails.” Read concluded.

Scott Allan grew up in southern California and was urged by Peter Barrett to try out for the 1972 Olympics. He won the U.S. trials and raced at the Olympic Games in Kiel, Germany on the Flying Dutchman. After graduating with a degree in business from USC, Scott worked for Murphy & Nye, a well-known sailmaker in Eastport, MD, before opening his own business in 1975. Scott currently has over 1,500 local clients and is a successful competitive sailor as well as an inductee of the Annapolis Maritime Hall of Fame. He is a member of the Maritime Advisory board for the city of Annapolis and he is a National Sailing Hall of Fame board member.

“As the sailmaking industry evolves, I am pleased to join North Sails and to give my clients access to the best sailmaking technology in the world,” Scott said. “North’s breakthroughs in sail design and manufacturing are second-to-none. Offering my client base access to North Sails products, while still giving them my personal attention, is the perfect formula for their success, whether they race or cruise,” continued Scott. ”After many years of competing against North, it’s a true pleasure to come full circle and join the company where I first got my start nearly four decades ago,” he concluded.

“On behalf of the local North Sails team, we are thrilled to have Scott here in our office at 317 Chester Avenue,” said North sales representative Jonathan Bartlett. “We have all known Scott for many years and he is well respected within the sailing industry. He has a great reputation and a solid sailmaking foundation,” Bartlett continued. “He has been a pillar of the local sailmaking scene for nearly 40 years and to have him on the North team is a win-win for North Sails and our local clients,” Bartlett said.
