Five Tips on Leadership

Ian Walker, skipper of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, is one of the United Kingdom’s most successful sailors with two Olympic silver medals to his name. He has challenged for the America’s Cup twice, skippering a British entry and as tactician for an Italian team, and is now guiding his third campaign in the Volvo Ocean Race.

He is an Ambassador for Fit For Business and possesses the traits that would transfer equally well into a business environment, specifically in terms of being a great team player, having strong leadership and being able to manage under the toughest of conditions.

Here are Ian’s top 5 tips on leadership:
1. Lead by example. You need to live and work by even higher standards than you set for others.
2. Make sure an individual’s roles and responsibilities are well understood. People will then become accountable for what they do.
3. Information/communication is key. People are empowered by knowledge.
4. Make sure that everybody in your organization feels valued.
5. Listen.
