Legends Cup to celebrate America’s Cup heroes

Published on February 5th, 2015

The Yacht Club de Pau is launching an international match-racing competition: The Legends Cup. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the 1995 America’s Cup, for which the test boats FRANCE LAB 1 and FRANCE LAB 2 were built, the Yacht Club de Pau will host this new international match-racing competition on October 15-18, 2015.

The purpose is to celebrate the sailing legends who have put their indelible mark on the history of the America’s Cup. The Legends Cup will reunite some of the greatest personalities of the America’s Cup. We wish through The Legends Cup to unite the passion, tradition and excitement of the competition. An event where legends compete in a spirit as combative as collegial.

The Legends Cup will be raced in two boats historically linked to the 29th America’s Cup – FRANCE LAB 1 & FRANCE LAB 2 – that were built as test boats for the French Challenge for the 1995 America’s Cup, and which are the only two America Class boats in 1/2 scale in the world.

Part of the French legacy of the greatest sailing competition in the world, the FRANCE LABs are unique sailboats, classified as part of the French Maritime Heritage since 2010. It is in the heart of the Basque Country at the splendid seaside resort of Saint Jean de Luz that the premier edition of The Legends Cup will be hosted.

The Yacht Club de Pau seeks to have 4 to 6 teams of 4 crews compete, of which the announcement of the names of the prestigious skippers will come in a few weeks.
