The Race of Their Lives – Episode 1

The 40,000 mile Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race will begin in London, UK on August 30 for the fleet of twelve identical Tony Castro designed Clipper 70s. The series is divided into 16 individual races, with the team with the best cumulative score winning the Clipper Race Trophy. Each team is led by a professional skipper with an all-amateur crew.

People of all ages and backgrounds have been attracted to take on this remarkable adventure for a wide range of reasons, not least to learn more about themselves on a voyage of self-discovery.

Whatever the motivation, ocean racing can be a great leveller as teams grow and evolve to take on this unique challenge. In this opening episode meet the 75 year-old yachting legend who founded the Clipper Race; the professional skipper who is taking on the responsibility of leading a team of amateur sailors; plus the rugby player, the builder, an executive assistant and a restaurateur, who are all embarking on the world’s longest ocean race. It’s an emotional start as they set sail on their great adventure: The Race of Their Lives.

The ports along the race route are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Cape Town, South Africa; Albany, Sydney, Hobart and Airlie Beach, Australia; Da Nang, Vietnam; Qingdao, China; Seattle, USA; Panama; New York, USA; Derry-Londonderry, Ireland; and Den Helder, Netherlands before returning to London by late July.
