Navy Wins McMillan Cup

Published on October 25th, 2015

The Navy offshore sailing team won the McMillan Cup for the 19th time in school history, topping nine other college teams on October 24-25 in Annapolis, MD. The McMillan Cup, the East Coast’s Big Boat Championship, is college sailing’s oldest regatta, as it was first competed for in 1928. Since 1950 it has been hosted by the Naval Academy in its Navy 44s.

Senior skipper Jackson Niketas and his Navy crew scored a big come-from-behind victory, posting a 1,2,1 in Sunday’s races to win by one point over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the 7-race series. Niketas’s crew included XO Jack Cathcart, Ryan Jaenke, Erik Derektor, Matt Finley, Teddy Papenthein, Rob Thyberg and Frank Yenney. The crew beat some pretty tough odds on Sunday in their effort.
