Sail Canada Sailor of the Month – Brad Boston

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the October report…

The month of October will mark the end of a successful sailing season for most here in Canada squeezing out final championships before the snow flies. The Canadian Match Racing Championships made its return after a 4-year hiatus, with six teams sailing the Flying Tiger out of host club RCYC. Landon Gardner, (Sailing 2 Sustainability) rounded out the event with a final record of 7-3 and the overall Canadian title.

The Queen’s University Sailing team had a blowout month with three trophies added to the display case including the Keelboat team (Clifton Kartner, Connor MacKenzie, Daniel Sheedy, Claire Boileau and Will Jones) qualifying for the SYWoC next year in France. Queen’s sailors also competed at home in the Can/Am Cup and finished 1st and 2nd in a fleet of 13.

Queen’s hosted the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CISA) Team Racing National Championship. With seven teams participating in the three-on-three sailing competition, Queen’s was poised for their fifth consecutive national championship. The Gaels thrived in the challenging conditions, coming out on top for the fifth year in a row, claiming the CICSA Team Racing title.

Peter Hall continues his attack in the Soling fleet, capturing yet another title at the Italian Soling Championships in Lake Garda. Hall sailed with son Will Hall and Steve Lacey, winning with a 2-point spread over German’s Koch/Hoermann.

Larchmont Yacht Club played host to the largest Viper 640 regatta in class history last month with 53 teams competing for the North American championship title. Canadian Brad Boston entered his team with the aim of stealing a fifth title away from the competitive fleet. The boat, appropriately named ‘Jackpot’, scored four bullets in the 12-race series, handily sailing to yet another victory title along with crew Luke Lawrence, and 2009 Sail Canada Rolex Sailor of the Year Curtis Florence.

“I am fortunate to sail with good friends who are really good sailors,” remarked Boston. “The Viper is really fast and affordable. We have a lot of fun on and off the water.”
