St Petersburg, FL (February 26, 2016) – After four races in gorgeous conditions, just one point separates the top pair of boats at the J/70 Midwinter Championship hosted by St Petersburg Yacht Club.
Allan Terhune’s Dazzler of Arnold, MD tallied a 1,3,7,1 for 12 points, just a notch ahead of the Texas team of Glenn Darden and Reese Hillard on Hoss (who scored 3,6,2,2). Will Welles’s Sea Bags Sailing Team from Portsmouth, RI locked in a solid day to round out the top three with 19 points.
Under clear skies, 46 teams from across the United States, Brazil and Finland took to the waters of Tampa Bay in winds of 10-12 knots with gusts to 15. Terhune dazzled in the opening race, trailed by Geoff Becker and the Darden/Hillard team. Becker transferred up to the top spot in the second contest, as Welles took second and Terhune third. It was Welles’ turn for the victory in race three, ahead of Darden/Hillard and John Brim’s Rimette. Terhune secured the day’s lead with a bullet in the final battle. Darden/Hillard again grabbed the silver spot with Welles in the bronze.
Racing continues through Sunday, February 28.
