Powell, OH (April 1, 2016) – America’s Cup defender Oracle Team USA has conceded to allow a late US entry to vie for the right to compete in the 35th Match in 2017.
Leatherlips Yacht Club, which sits on the Northwest side of Columbus, Ohio, is located on the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir, which is part of the Olentangy River, which is a tributary to the Scioto River, which is a tributary to the Ohio River, which is a tributary to the Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico, fulfilling the “Arm of the Sea” requirement of the Deed of Gift.
Questioning the qualifications of the inland club sailors, Commodore Mike Mariachi likes their chances. “We are lake sailors. The Great Sound in Bermuda is very lake-like. We just need to learn not to drink the salt water.”
Officially known as Team Shawnee Tribe, the name is a tribute to Shawnee Chief Leatherlips. “Our club is named after the tribal leader,” explained Mariachi. “The white settlers called him Leatherlips because of his admirable trait of never breaking a promise, so we thought that’d be appropriate for the America’s Cup.”
The team does not plan to seek corporate sponsorship, rather rely on a GoFundMe account and the exceptional skill of club members in picking of horses at several local race tracks.
