New Fees Required by World Sailing

Southampton, UK (1 April 2016) – World Sailing, the world governing body for the sport of sailing, has announced that, with immediate effect, the word “Sailing” shall be prohibited from being used unless previously sanctioned by themselves and upon payment of a fee.
“We already control the use of the word ‘World’ (Regulation 25.1) and it just makes sense to control the word ‘Sailing’ as well,” explained Malcolm Page, Head of Marketing and Media.
When pressed for further information, Page confirmed that the world ‘Sailing’ included magazines, clubs, clothing, “and anything with ‘sailing’ in the title.” In an attempt to sweeten the pill, he added that the fee payable is on a “very generous” sliding scale so that groups like the Taylor Pond Sailing and Social Club (42 members) will only pay a few hundred dollars, while others like the Extreme Sailing Series will pay “substantially more.”
According to Dave Reed, editor of Sailing World magazine, an agreement was reached with World Sailing. “We initially thought that we would have a major problem, but when we explained how we ‘called dibs‘ on the name, they backed off.”
