Association of Professional Race Officials Formed

Published on October 16th, 2016

An Association of Professional Race Officials for sailing was recently formed to protect and promote the interests of professional race officials.

The impetus for the formation of the Association was the growing number of umpired events which feature larger and faster boats. When small power craft carrying race officials are required to maneuver in close proximity to fast moving racing boats there are inherent risks involved. When officiating races for foiling boats the risk of incidents involving sailors and race officials inevitably increases.

Race officials are often contracted on an event by event basis and their level of personal liability in case of a serious accident is rarely clear. One of the Association’s first actions will be to seek out advice regarding personal injury and liability insurance and to work with events to ensure clarity on insurance coverage.

Long time professional PRO Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio (USA) will take on the role of Honorary President, backed up by Bill O’Hara (IRL) and Sofia Truchanowicz (POL) who will form the administration team.

The Association is inclusive and all race officials who work on a professional basis for sailing events are welcome as members. For information, contact Bill O’Hara at billoharairl@gmail.com
