Team USA Wins 29th Optimist Team Cup

Published on October 30th, 2016

Team USA with Justin Callahan, Mitchell Callahan, Bella Casaretto, Joey Meagher and Connor Boland won the prestigious 29th Opti Team Cup, held October 29-30 on Lake Wannsee in Berlin, Germany. Sixteen teams competed from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, and USA.

In cool northerly winds with gusts up to 25 knots, Team USA showed a very strong performance already in the round robin, where each of the 16 teams sailed against each other team. With their strong mix of individual boat speed and sophisticated team tactics, they managed not to lose a single race and logically qualified for the best of three finals, where they raced against Sweden, which had 12 wins in the round robin.

With two clear race wins over the Swedes, USA achieved an overwhelming victory with the last one for a USA Optimist team at the OTC dating back six years already to 2010. This was the first time ever that a team has gone undefeated in the 29-year history of this event.

The Swedish team won the Silver medal for the second year in a row, and Poland was the Bronze medal finishers.

This stunning victory for USA follows their victory at the 2016 World Championship in Portugal in June.
