Inaugural California One Design Offshore Championship

Published on June 1st, 2017

Responding to the increasing demand from regional sailors for competitive one design offshore racing, the Newport Harbor Yacht Club will host the first annual One Design Offshore Championship June 9-11 in the waters off the Newport Beach, CA. Three classes – J70s, J120s and Pac52s – will compete in this event that comes prior to Long Beach Race Week on June 23-25 in Long Beach, CA.

“The regatta was put together by local Newport Beach sailors and the NHYC to provide an opportunity for one design classes to sail off-shore,” said Paul Stemler, regatta chairman. “Newport Beach and NHYC have a long history of supporting high level off-shore sailing events having hosted the Etchells Worlds, Etchells North Americans, the Baldwin Cup, and the Star Worlds. We saw this as an opportunity to both further that tradition and support our local sailors. We are especially excited and honored to have the new Pac52 class participating and look forward to great racing.”

The schedule includes social events at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and three days of racing: June 9 (only the Pac52s), June 10 and 11.

“While there will be accomplished sailors from all over the U.S. participating, many of the sailors grew up and live in the Newport Beach area, giving the event both a local flavor and supporting the history and tradition of high level one design sailing,” Stemler continued.

“This will be the second official regatta of our inaugural 2017 racing season,” said Julie Servais, Pac52 class manager, who said all four Pac52s of this class – Rio, BadPak, Invisible Hand and Fox – will be participating.
