A “Gentle” Introduction to Expedition Software

Published on November 2nd, 2017

Will Oxley, a lifelong sailor and racing yachtsman, has competed in five Round the World races, most recently with Team Alvimedica in the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.

His skills as navigator are legendary, and it is these skills that he seeks to share to help improve the knowledge and safety amongst sailors worldwide. His first book, Modern Race Navigation, was published in 2014, and now he is back for another try to help us.

Will’s second book, Expedition Navigation Software: A “Gentle” Introduction, is intended for new users of Expedition Marine Navigation Software, which is the pre-eminent tactical and navigation yacht racing software in the world. Expedition has been in development since the mid-1990s by veteran Volvo Ocean Race navigator and Whitbread winner Nick White, and its use is common amid the elite events around the world.

Expedition is believed to be the most widely used navigation racing software in the English-speaking world. Most users are navigators, but there is a great advantage in skippers, boat captains, owners, tacticians, and other crew members knowing how to operate it. So Will has set out in his latest book to provide these people, and new navigators, with the information needed to get started with Expedition.

“Of course, there is so much more to navigation than knowing how to use Expedition,” notes Oxley. “This book does not address any of that but rather is purely an introduction to the nuts and bolts of using the program.”
