Fantastic Display of Sportsmanship

Published on April 30th, 2018

At the New England Fleet Race Championship, the top three teams qualified for the High School Doublehanded National Championship on May 11-13 in Seabrook, TX.

The first two schools, Tabor Academy and The Hotchkiss School, are well-funded private institutions, but in third was Barrington High School team (above) which is now hustling to raise funds for the trip.

To the rescue of Barrington comes Chris Lukens, who sails for Hotchkiss and wants to see Barrington’s dream realized.

“Barrington, being a small public high school, is not able to fund their trip to Texas and has started a gofundme page. We had a bake sale as a team at school to raise money for their page and brought in 400 dollars. This amount, however, is not nearly enough to take a team from Rhode Island to Texas and will not bring Barrington to their goal of $6300.

“They have now raised just over $5000 but need help spreading the word. We really want to see our friends on this team go to nationals as they have been sailing lights out all season and really deserve it. The event is coming up fast so this is quickly becoming an urgent matter.”

Not sure which dream is bigger – for Barrington to get to nationals or that sportsmanship can remain an integral part of our sport. We are hoping they both can be realized.
