Sail Canada Sailor of the Month

Published on June 30th, 2018

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the latest recipient.

Sailors from 47 nations gathered to compete at the 34th Medemblik Regatta in the Netherlands from May 22 to the 26, 2018. With light and puffy winds at the beginning of the week, sailors were confronted with some challenging conditions.

Canadian Sailing Development Squad (CSDS) athletes, Luke Ruitenberg and Fillah Karim attended the event, competing in the Laser fleet against 43 sailors. While the competition was tough, both sailors made their way up the scoreboard, qualifying for the medal race and finishing overall 8th and 9th respectively.

“We had lots of sunshine and a full range of conditions over the 5 days of racing in Medemblik,” explained Ruitenberg. “With shifty winds consistency was key. I was happy with my result over all and qualified for my first medal race in an international fleet!”

Congratulations to the Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month – Luke Ruitenberg
