Youth Sailors to be Pre-Game Show
Published on September 6th, 2018
When the Extreme Sailing Series brings its international stadium racing circuit to the USA next month, the high speed, high foiling GC32 teams may be the headliners but the opening act could very well steal the show in San Diego, CA.
With the professional teams scheduled for October 18-21, the O’pen BICs have been chosen to display modern youth sailing in front of the Grand Stands immediately preceding the Extreme Sailing Series GC32 racing on October 20-21.
This model of combining the O’pen BICS with the big boys proved successful at the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda when 32 youth sailors from 10 nation competed between races. It was an experience of a lifetime for these aspiring young sailors and that vibe returns again in San Diego.
Spectators will enjoy the O’pen BIC Un-Regatta within boat lengths of the Harbor Island shoreline and the free Race Village. What’s an ‘Un-Regatta? As crazy as it sounds, the purpose is to have fun. With the race course as the stage, results are not nearly as important as the sailors having a good time sailing and putting on a show for the spectators.
Because of limitations, registration is guaranteed for the first 40 applicants. Both Under 17 and Under 13 age groups will be performing. No prior O’pen BIC expertise is required. Depending on logistics, additional entries may become available… but no promises.
