Tragic collision with high-speed ferry

Published on May 29th, 2019

A collision between Artem Akimov, the leader of the Russian RS:X Youth Team, and a high-speed ferry has resulted in the death of 18-year-old windsurfer Artem Akimov in the waters off of St. Petersburg, Russia.

The incident occurred at about three o’clock in the afternoon on May 27, and according to preliminary reports, the athlete did not notice the approaching passenger hydrofoil vessel because of his sail, nor did the captain see the windsurfer crossing its path.

The remains were found several hours later with the athlete initially identified by equipment. The incident occurred in an area active with ferry traffic, and while it was reported how Artyom knew the waters thoroughly, investigators believe he was in violation for approaching the route of the ferry.

A surveillance camera recorded the collision between Akimov and the Meteor-type ship capable of 30+ knots.
