Storm watch at J/105 North Americans
Published on September 6th, 2019
Marblehead, MA (September 6, 2019) – Good Trade, led by Nicole Breault and Bruce Stone, is in 1st place with 12 points after Day 2 of the J/105 North American Championship hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club. Conditions were considerably stronger than on Day 1, with steady wind with from the Northeast and ENE between 10-15 knots and building as the day went on, along with the seas, in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian’s brush by tomorrow.
Taking the first race of the second day of competition (Race 4) was Tim Russell’s Ne*Ne out of Tiburon and St. Francis YC, followed by Texan Ken Horne on Final Final in 2nd, and Marblehead boat Merlin, skippered by Charlie Garrard. Team Good Trade came in 4th, but made up for it in the next race by taking 1st place, and then a 2nd for Race 6, to retain their top spot. Final Final was again 2nd in Race 5, and 5th in Race 6 for a total of 19 points, followed closely by Ne*Ne with a 6th place in Race 5, and 1st place in Race 6 for 23 points and 3rd overall by tiebreak, though numerically tied with Merlin, who rolled a 3-4-3 for the day for 4th overall after two days of competition. Terry Michaelson’s The Usual Suspects, winner of the first race of the Championship, has clawed back into 5th place overall, taking 3rd in Race 5.
There is no racing tomorrow due to high winds and sea state anticipated as Hurricane Dorian grazes the coast during the day. The forecast for the final day calls for much more favorable conditions, so the time of the first warning signal has been changed from 1200 hours to 1100 hours in order to make up for some of the lost time.
Racing is held from September 5 to 8.
