Sail Canada Sailor of the Month

Sail Canada’s Sailor of the Month award acknowledges sailing achievements by Canadians involved or associated with the sport in all its forms. Here is the latest recipient:

To many, sailing is more than just a sport – it’s a lifestyle. A living embodiment of that motto is the man himself, Mark Lammens.

For the past 35 years, Mark has been involved in many aspects of the sport; as an athlete in the Finn and Soling, as Canadian Team Coach at big games, but also on home waters, and of course as a volunteer and administrator. He has gone above and beyond with the time, commitment, and passion he has put into the sailing community over the past 3 decades.

“Mark’s impact on sailing in Canada is profound, from his competitive days in the Finn and Soling to his coaching days at the regional, provincial and national team levels,” said Ken Dool, Canadian Sailing Team Head Coach. “His impact on the leadership of today’s National team can not be overlooked.

“Mark introduced both Mike Milner and myself to coaching at the more ‘serious’ level when we all worked together at the Ontario Sailing Centre – Geneva Parkway back in 1986. He ignited our collective passion for the Finn class specifically and for coaching sailing in general. His passion for the sport is second to no ones and his encyclopedic memory on sailing events and activities is legendary.”

Mark’s skills as an athlete, coach, and mentor are admirable. We wouldn’t be where we are without him.

Recently, Mark announced his retirement as the Sail Saskatchewan Executive Director, and it is with great pleasure that we recognized him as the Helly Hansen Sailor of the Month for everything he has contributed to the sport over the years.
