Inside the Para World Sailing Strategy

Published on December 3rd, 2019

As the sport’s international federation, World Sailing is responsible for the development and promotion of the sport around the world along with the management of sailing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

But when this role was not sufficiently fulfilled, leading to the International Paralympic Committee dropping Sailing from the Paralympic Games after its inclusion as an official sport between 2000 and 2016, it was a wake-up call for World Sailing to review this sector of the sport.

This ongoing process continued at World Sailing’s 2019 Annual Conference where the 2020 – 2023 Para World Sailing Strategy was launched and shared.

The Goals include:
#1 – Increase Worldwide Participation
#2 – Expand Competition
#3 – Effective marketing and communications
#4 – Governance and rules

With Sailing out as a Paralympic sport for Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, World Sailing will be pursing these goals, priorities, and strategies as the sport aims for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.
