Chad Rechcygl wins Nite Nationals

Published on March 8th, 2020

Twenty-seven competitors came out for the 2020 Nite Nationals, held March 6-8 in Green Lake, WI. Chad Rechcygl dominated the Gold fleet, finishing with a 14.25 points edge on second place Mike Jankowski with Daniel Hearn in third.

Lively winds and rutted ice put tremendous loads on the boats. Other than rigs coming down and a few mast failures, the competitors used good judgement and kept the racing safe. However, in race eight of the nine race series, regatta leader Rechcygl had something happen at the worst possible time, his hull broke.

Facing the prospect of not being able to complete the regatta, Nite Class rules allow for equipment substitution, so when the silver fleet finished their race, Rechcygl borrowed Nite Commodore John Hayashi’s canary yellow boat for the last Gold fleet race, finishing fourth, and won the regatta.
