J/70 World Championship is cancelled

Published on April 5th, 2020

(April 5, 2020) – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the International J/70 Class Association has cancelled the 2020 J/70 World Championship planned for July 25-August 1 in Los Angeles, USA.

“The Executive Committee understands the huge commitment of time and money it takes to participate in a major Championship, as well as the enormous resources that our host clubs and their volunteers and sponsors dedicate to such events,” said the Class statement. “The Executive Committee has determined that, because of the varying levels of infection and disruption across the world—and the reality that any return to normal sailing activity will also vary across the world—it is impossible to assure every Class member will have a fair chance to prepare for the commitment of a World Championship during 2020.”

The 2021 J/70 World Championship, which had been planned to be held in Monaco, will now be on August 7-15 in Los Angeles, USA.

Editor’s note: For full disclosure, the International J/70 Class Association statement referred to the 2020 J/70 World Championship as postponed, but they also state how there will be no 2020 J/70 World Championship. The way we see it, you can’t have it both ways, so we stated that the 2020 event was cancelled.
