Clarity comes for US Olympic Team

Published on May 5th, 2020

Bristol, RI (May 5, 2020) – US Sailing has confirmed the nomination of the eight athletes that had completed the selection procedures for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team. This fulfilled the process for seven events to be held at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, while three events remain unconfirmed.

US Sailing had been waiting for direction from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) as to whether the one-year postponement of Tokyo 2020 would alter the selection process, but that was determined today when the USOPC released its ‘Guiding Principles for Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Selection Procedures’.

The document states, “Where athletes, or a team, have been nominated to the USOPC, in full or in part, the selection procedure shall not be amended in such a way that removes those already nominated athletes.”

Completed selection:
• Riley Gibbs (Long Beach, Calif.) & Anna Weis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Mixed Nacra 17
• Stephanie Roble (East Troy, Wisc.) & Maggie Shea (Wilmette, Ill.), Women’s 49erFX
• Charlie Buckingham (Newport Beach, Calif.), Men’s Laser
• Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.), Women’s Laser Radial
• Farrah Hall (Annapolis, Md.), Women’s RS:X
• Pedro Pascual (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Men’s RS:X

U.S. athletes Nevin Snow and Dane Wilson also won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the Men’s 49er class, but their nomination status will be made official pending country qualification. The USA does not presently have an entry in this event, but will advance if a currently qualified nation does not accept their entry.

The Trials for the Men’s 470, Women’s 470, and Finn classes were suspended when selection events were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With Selection Procedures being amended, US Sailing will nominate the five remaining athletes upon the conclusion of each class’ Trials.

All nominations to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team are pending approval of the USOPC.
