Eight Bells: Charlie Proctor

Published on May 7th, 2020

Charlie Proctor, who crewed for his sailing icon dad Ched in victory at the 2018 Lightning North American Championship, was killed in a bicycling accident on May 5 in Arlington, MA. Charlie was 27 years old.

Charlie and his girlfriend, Alison Piasecki were riding their bikes through the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Appleton Street when they were hit by a car at about 6:30 p.m., according to the statement.

Charlie was taken to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, where he died from his injuries, officials said. Alison was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials said the cyclists were traveling east on Massachusetts Avenue while the car, a Hyundai Sonata, was traveling west on the same road. The 20-year-old man who was driving the Hyundai and the vehicle’s two other occupants stayed at the scene after the incident, officials said.

Charlie graduated from Tufts University in 2014, where he was a member of the sailing team. After graduating from Tufts, he began working at Architectural Engineers, Inc. (Boston, MA) where he was involved in HVAC building designs on projects around the Boston area, including Logan International Airport, the Tufts University library, and the Worcester tourist center.

“He was a valued member of our team, and was recently licensed as a professional engineer, which was very important to him,” his coworker Robin Greenleaf wrote in a company statement. “We identified him early on for not only his engineering skills, but his leadership abilities. His loss is a huge blow to our company, where his future had no limits.”

Charlie’s brother Thomas reports the incident was just ten minutes away from his home in Somerville, MA. “It is a busy, four way forked intersection. The only traffic control is four flashing yellow lights which did nothing to protect him as a driver turned left though the fork and hit him head on.”

Charlie is survived by his parents, Ched and Judy Proctor, his brother Thomas, sister-in law Sandra Voss, his girlfriend Alison Piasecki, and many cherished friends.
