Details of IOC loan to World Sailing
Published on July 15th, 2020
For the Olympic sports, their International Federations (IF) receive payment from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) every four years after the games. For most IFs, this money amounts to a massive percentage of their budget, and with the one year postponement of Tokyo 2020, the payment was delayed as well.
To help carry their sports for the next 12 months, the IOC has already provided the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and IFs with around $100 million USD since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis.
In this report from InsidetheGames, they share the terms received by World Sailing:
(July 15, 2020) – New details have emerged of the loan World Sailing secured from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as part of the estimated $150 million (£117 million/€129 million) aid package for the Olympic Movement assembled by the Lausanne body in the wake of postponement of Tokyo 2020.
According to World Sailing, the loan is interest-free and repayable in six equal annual installments beginning on December 31, 2021. It may be drawn over the period from June 2020 to April 2021.
The information is contained in the 2019 accounts of World Sailing (UK), a subsidiary which provides administrative and technical services to the governing body.
These have just been filed at Companies House, though the document does not specify the actual size of the IOC loan. However, the new details may be of broader interest, since it seems possible that similar terms might have offered by the IOC to other International Federations (IFs).
IOC President Thomas Bach disclosed today that the IOC had allocated $63 million USD of loans and donations to a total of 20 IFs since the start of the COVID-19 crisis. This amounts to an average of just over $3 million USD each. Full report.
