Welcome Back to Nova Scotia

The Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC) is hosting its inaugural Welcome Back Regatta on August 21-23 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Due to COVID-19, most events were cancelled this summer, leading to a lack of competitive sailing events in Nova Scotia. However, LYC has seized the opportunity to put together a world class event to help people get back on the water while respecting government regulations.
“Given current global conditions, it’s really a unique privilege to be able to put on an event and race sailboats with our friends from across Nova Scotia in home waters,” said Andreas Josenhans, LYC’s Commodore Elect and an America’s Cup winner. “We’re excited to fill the need for world class racing here at home. It’s a chance to get out on the water and enjoy excellent sailing in the comfort of your own backyard.”
Sailors attending from across the Maritimes can expect three days of racing for both one design and PHRF fleets. It’s expected that 30 to 40 sailboats will participate in the regatta, making it Nova Scotia’s largest keelboat event this summer.
For Chester native Jacob Saunders, who was in the midst of an Olympic campaign before the pandemic, the Welcome Back Regatta is an opportunity to sail and keep his competitive edge. “We’re very fortunate to live in Nova Scotia on any given day, but to be in a place where we can gather and host an event like this is special,” he said. “It’s great to see one design racing happening this year.”
The 2020 Lunenburg Yacht Club Welcome Back Regatta will follow all applicable Province of Nova Scotia COVID-19 Guidelines.
