No cancellation for 166th Annual Regatta

Newport, RI (October 3, 2020) – First sailed in 1846, the 166th edition of New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta got underway today with a challenging forecast for the fleets racing in ORC, PHRF, and one design.

It didn’t look so promising this morning, as the northerly faded away and the forecast called for a very light southerly. But after a postponement, a lively sea breeze filled in mid-afternoon and enabled all fleets to get in at least two races.

Alongside the Annual Regatta is the 2020 Melges IC37 US National Championship which completed their second day of racing.

Racing is planned for October 3-4.

First sailed in 1846, New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta is traditionally held at the start of the Newport sailing season, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was pushed back first to late August before finally settling on October 2-4.

The three-day format includes a race around Conanicut Island on Friday and two days of buoy racing or navigator-course racing on Saturday and Sunday. The 166th Annual Regatta also includes the 2020 Melges IC37 National Championship.
