Auckland, New Zealand (December 17, 2020) – The first racing day of the PRADA America’s Cup World Series (ACWS) Auckland concluded with New York Yacht Club American Magic (USA) leading the ranking after winning both their matches today.

A total of four matches were held for the four teams in a south-westerly breeze ranged between 15 and 19 knots, with the top speed of the day at 49.1 knots reached by New Zealand.

Race 1: New Zealand beat Italy by 3:13.
This was never close, giving the Italians an early wake-up call. This wasn’t about starts or shifts, it was about a speed difference. – Full report

Race 2 – USA beat Great Britain by 5:00
While the USA team looked solid, their victory was made easy by technical problems for the Brits. – Full report

Race 3 – Italy beat Great Britain (retired)
The Brits were the gift that kept on giving, with onboard problems keeping them from completing the course. – Full report

Race 4 – USA beat New Zealand by 0:12
The two unbeaten teams provided the match of the day, though it wasn’t close until the Kiwis gained the edge at the final weather mark and then fumbled the lead. If the USA had any edge, they limited it by conservative tactics, while the Kiwis had plenty of unforced errors while still staying in the race. – Full report

The ACWS resumes tomorrow at 3:00 PM NZT weather permitting, with exact start time published every racing day on the americascup.com. The ACWS is December 17-19, with the final result to determine the initial pairings for the two stage Christmas Race on December 20.
