Italian race to Monaco for America’s Cup
Published on March 4th, 2021
The America’s Cup Deed of Gift describes what is necessary to challenge, and among the requirements is to host an annual regatta in which its venue was “an ocean water course on the sea, or on an arm of the sea, or one which combines both…”
For Circolo della Vela Sicilia, winner of the Prada Cup with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, their regatta in 2021 is the XVI edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo, an offshore race which departs from the Gulf of Mondello on August 21.
Located to the north in Sicily, the 2020 edition fell victim to COVID-19 but is ready to resume with its course into the Mediterranean sea, passing through a gate set in the vicinity of Porto Cervo (Sardinia), before choosing whether to leave the island of Corsica on the right or left in the route towards the finish line set in front of the Principality of Monaco.
Two years ago, 57 boats were on the start line for the race course of about 500 miles which represents a unique challenge for offshore sailing, pursuing the course record held by the Slovenian 100 footer Esimit Europa 2 of 47 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds.
