Around the world, no experience needed

Published on March 24th, 2021

A fully crewed, retro race, in the spirit of the 1973 Whitbread round-the-world Race, gets underway September 2023 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the original event. With entrants competing in ocean-going GRP production yachts designed before 1988, there will be no computers, no satellites, no GPS, and no high-tech materials.

The Ocean Globe Race will start in Europe a 27,000-mile sprint around the globe, encompassing four legs, which take in the Southern Ocean and three great Capes. The 2023 race mirrors the original Whitbread in both its route and reliance on the courage and skill required to take a small craft across vast oceans.

Among the 26 entrants from 17 countries taking on this truly human endeavor is Team Translated sailing the Swan 65 Translated 9, originally the ADC Accutrac which competed in the 1977-78 edition.

Sponsored by the world’s leading translation company, the crew will be comprised of both experts and amateur enthusiasts, with training off the coast of San Francisco under the guidance of Paul Cayard who won the 1997-98 edition.

“Translated is thrilled to be taking part in the Ocean Globe Race 2023,” said Marco Trombetti, co-founder and CEO of Translated. “The race perfectly captures our company’s spirit: While we are leaders in machine intelligence, we believe that humans–and the human spirit–can never be replaced by machines or technology, be it in sailing or translation.”

The team is recruiting crew to experience sailing around the world, and no prior sailing experience is needed. For details, click here.
