Cabo Race: Bring on the mariachis

Published on March 24th, 2021

(March 24, 2021) – With 18 starters for the 2021 Cabo Race, 16 teams completed the 800 nm course from Newport Beach, CA to Cabo San Lucas, MEX.

The final results have the top five overall as Roy Disney’s modified Volvo 70 Pyewacket 70 (1st, ORR A), David Clark’s SC70 Grand Illusion (1st, ORR B), Robert Pethick’s Rogers 46 Bretwalda3 (1st, ORR C), John Shulze’s Santa Cruz 50 Horizon (2nd, ORR C), and Raymond Paul’s Botin 65 Artemis (2nd, ORR A).

Following staggered starts on March 19 and 20, it was a quick race, quick enough for Disney’s team to complete the course in 01:21:22:53, shattering the previous monohull record set in 2005 by Doug Baker’s Magnitude 80 of 02:13:25:58. The effort would earn Disney’s team elapsed, class, and overall honors.

As for the two retirees, it was at 21:22 on March 20 when Manouch Moshayedi’s Bakewell White 100 Rio 100 retired due to rudder linkage issues, while Doug Baker’s Dencho/Kernan 75 Peligroso retired at 01:30 on March 21 due to keel damage from a possible sea life collision.
