2021 Lanzarote International Regatta

Published on March 26th, 2021

The 2021 Lanzarote International Regatta on March 21-26 welcomed 49er, 49erFX, and Nacra 17 international teams to the Canary Islands, offering a rare competition to help prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Spanish team proved to be more than ready for the test, taking three podiums with two golds and a bronze: Diego Botín and Iago López topping the 49er, Canary Islands favourite Tara Pacheco and Catalan Florian Trittel leading in Nacra 17, and Tamara Echegoyen with Paula Barceló surprising with 49er FX bronze.

With over 100 competitors from more than 30 countries in attendance, the only win missed by the Spanish armada was captured by Rio 2016 Gold Medalists Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze in the 49erFX.

The event was also the final Europe and Africa qualifier for Tokyo, with Ireland securing the Olympic berth in the 49er, Belgium in the women’s 49erFX class, and Finland getting the Nacra 17 Olympic ticket.

North America was represented in the skiff classes, with Andrew Mollerus and Ian MacDiarmid (USA) in 13th and Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea (USA) in 8th.
