Allianz Regatta extends path to Olympics

The first edition of the Allianz Regatta on June 2-13 will be sailed in Medemblik, Netherlands. As part of World Sailing’s Hempel World Cup Series for the coming two years, nearly 300 sailors from 47 countries will compete in eight of the 10 Olympic events.

The Laser men is currently up to 87 entries, four of which are from the top ten of the last World Cup and 12 that are qualified for Tokyo. In the Laser Radial, entries are at 71 participants, of which 14 are from the top 15 of the most recent World Cup and 23 participants are qualified for this year’s Games.

Among the men in the 49er, 48 participants so far, six of whom are seeded for Tokyo with six teams from the top 13 of the most recent World Cup. In the 49erFX class 29 teams have registered.

“There are challenging times for all of us but the Olympic athletes have remained focused on preparing for Tokyo 2020,” said Event director Frans Hin. “For the sailors, we are pleased to allow a trimmed down version of the Allianz Regatta in Medemblik.

“We are very excited to partner with World Sailing and host an official Hempel World Cup Series event. We have strong entries now in four Olympic classes and it looks like some nations will use the event as a final national qualifier for Tokyo 2020.

“As organizers on behalf of the Dutch Sailing Federation we are looking forward to running the first multi-class event in Olympic Sailing since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will be run in a safe manner for all participants and Dutch resident and will allow the sailors one last serious test ahead of the Olympic Games.”

The Allianz Regatta in 2021 will be split into two weeks. In this way, there is sufficient space and time for everyone to be able to let all competitions take place in a safe manner with due observance of the applicable Corona measures.
