Massive fleet for Sunfish North Americans

Published on June 10th, 2021

U.S. Sunfish Class Association is holding its 2021 North American Championship on June 11-13 in Mooresville, NC.

“We were planning for a max of 50 boats whereby we could comply with COVID protocols,” noted Event Chair John Butine. “Now, that the country and the sailing community is coming back to life, we have over 80 registered Sunfish sailors coming to Carolina from as far away as Peru and Guatemala.”

When the lockdown began 16 months ago, sailors shifted to singlehanded sailing in a Sunfish. As vintage Sunfish hit the water, there was an unexpected demand for parts and sails. USSCA Class President Will Kresic added, “What the Class is going to enjoy this weekend is the largest Sunfish regatta in decades and a marked resurgence in Class participation.”

The forecast for Lake Norman calls for winds from 2 to 20 knots with possible pop-up thunderstorms in the afternoons.
