Thirty teams for Star North Americans

Thirty teams have gathered for the 2021 Star North American Championship with racing on August 18-21 in Newport Beach, CA. The fleet includes seven Star world champions, five at the helm and two as crew.

One of the crew is world renowned skipper Paul Cayard with his son Daniel, a third generation Star sailor as his grandfather is 1969 Star World Champion and 1964 Olympic Bronze Medalist Pelle Petterson (SWE). The other crew is Bruno Prada (BRA), winner of five Star World Championships, three with Robert Scheidt, one with Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and one with Augie Diaz (USA), his skipper this week and defender of the North American title.

The other world champions are Carl Buchan, Eric Doyle, John McCausland, and George Szabo, sailing respectively with Jamie Buchan, Payson Infelise, Brian Terhaar, and Guy Avellon.

Prada is also a double Olympic medalist while Caleb Paine (USA), bronze medalist at Rio 2016, will crew for Doug Smith. Brian Lebetter (USA), a silver medalist at Barcelona 1992, is sailing with crew Ben Wilkinson.

Carl and Jamie Buchan, winners of the Baxter Bowl Regatta on August 14-15, are among the favorites for the North Americans, along with Augie Diaz and Bruno Prada who finished second and George Szabo with Guy Avellon in third.
