All systems go for 2021 Big Boat Series

Published on September 9th, 2021

After cancelling last year due to the pandemic, the 2021 Rolex Big Boat Series is prepared to safely proceed with its 56th edition on September 16-19 in San Francisco, CA.

Over 80 boats will be competing in ORR, Classics, J/70, and J/105 classes in addition to the J/88 North Americans and Express 37 Pacific Coast Championship.

With COVID-19 still lurking, all socials will be held outside and proof of vaccination will be needed to enter host St. Francis Yacht Club along with mask wearing at all times while inside, except when actively eating and drinking.

“The daily downwind finishes can be spine-tingling to watch, with crews visibly giving their all and powering up the rigs to cross the finish line at top speed,” said Ruhne. “They pass so close to the clubhouse they can hear spectators cheering from shore, and it will be great to convey that sensory experience to all the fans, friends and family members viewing remotely.”

“After two years of build-up, it will be super-charged on the water and super-fun hanging out outside with competitors from across the fleets,” said 2019 J/70 class winner John Brigden.

With 22 J/105 teams, it will be game on for Ian Charles, skipper of Maverick which placed third in Rolex Big Boat Series 2019. “Team Maverick is invested in all aspects of our racing program,” he said. “We have made improvements in rig tune, optimizing crew weight, boat handling, electronics and tactics by using the best information from coaches and consultants. We had a very successful 2021 season and we are hoping to carry that momentum into RBBS.”
