Eight Bells: Andy Macdonald

Published on December 7th, 2021

Andy Macdonald passed away unexpectedly December 1, 2021 at the age of 72. Andy was a rare example of having a successful career practicing law while maintaining the ability to compete at a high level.

He had a long and successful sailing career including the America’s Cup, first-to-finish in the Transpac, Bermuda, and Fastnet among his many accomplishments. Andy was a fierce and fair competitor, while his sailing skill was displayed on the water, friendship and graciousness off the water epitomized his life.

His affection with the Star Class led to victories in the 2017 Eastern Hemisphere Champion, 2007 District 5 Championship, 2008 King of Spain, 2007 and 2008 Lipton Cup, and 2016 Rollins Bowl. He also was on the Judiciary Board of the Star Class from 2015-2019 serving as Chair the past few years.

Andy was also a valued supporter of Scuttlebutt Sailing News. His contributions to the publication, while competing under the Scuttlebutt Sailing Club burgee, were greatly appreciated. We miss him already.
