Progress made for The Sailing Museum

Published on December 22nd, 2021

In May 2022, the public will be invited to grand opening of The Sailing Museum in Newport, RI. The educational non-profit organization will be home to the National Sailing Hall of Fame and America’s Cup Hall of Fame, with state-of-the-art displays to celebrate sailing’s heritage, honor the legends of the sport, and inspire new generations of sailors and innovators.

Here are some of the projects underway:

Designed by Paul Weber Architecture and approved by the RI Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, our new front doors were brought to life thanks to a grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust.

The entire back wall has been rebuilt! Windows and doors now show off a stellar view of Newport Harbor. This ‘Legends of Sailing’ area will include movable exhibits, allowing private events to be hosted in the museum.

The ‘Dorade Deck’ includes this restored atrium space and reclaimed balcony that overlooks the first-floor exhibit hall. Olin & Rod Stephens and the iconic yacht Dorade will be honored here.

The foyer of the Armory is a pre-ticket area, meaning that the newly restored space of this historic property is accessible to the public. We are grateful to Kirby Perkins Construction, not only for their masterful work seen here, but also their in-kind support of the project.

A Sunfish, Windsurfer, and DN Iceboat will be among eight full-size boats featured in the museum.

J/Boats is delivering a J/24 that’s been cut from bow to stern to reveal the inside of the hull for display in the first floor exhibit hall. The boat is getting a new paint job to resemble Ragtime, the hull that started it all for Hall of Famers Rod and Bob Johnstone.
