Fastest PHRF Sailboat on the East Coast

Published on January 17th, 2022

As found on ebay, this 41-footer was described as the ‘Fastest PHRF Sailboat on the Entire East Coast When She Was Launched’, and with such a bold statement comes an equally colorful history. Enjoy…

This bright red custom Formula 41 racing and cruising yacht was originally commissioned by a drug dealer who had a penchant for yacht racing (Or, maybe it was a yacht racer who had a penchant for dealing drugs?).

While Formula Yachts of Groton, CT made a few models of production Evelyns, Evelution was built as a one-off, custom 41. When launched in 1982, Evelution cost ~$250,000 without sails. She was campaigned that year up and down the East Coast with Bob Evelyn himself and Ben Hall (of Hall Spars) racing on behalf of the new owner, winning trophies all along the way.

Then, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) arrested the owner and Evelution was seized. The Coast Guard Academy persuaded the DEA to donate the boat to the Academy, so the cadets could train and race on her.

After several years, the Academy sold the boat to a private owner, who raced her along Long Island Sound for several years. I bought from the owner who has been sailing Evelution for the last 20 years in New York harbor and Long Island Sound.

Technically ready to sail but needs cosmetic attention and drip leaks fixed. Was for sale very recently for $29,900 but now in the middle of winter she is for sale with an incredibly low opening bid price of only $12,000. As of January 17 there were no bids.
