Defender reveals core team for 37th America’s Cup

Published on February 24th, 2022

As details are slowly revealed for the 37th America’s Cup, defenders Emirates Team New Zealand have revealed their core sailing team will be led by Skipper Peter Burling who is joined by Blair Tuke, Andy Maloney, Nathan Outteridge, Glenn Ashby, and Josh Junior.

Outteridge, who helmed for Swedish America’s Cup challenger Artemis Racing in 2013 and 2017, is the lone new addition among the past Kiwi team members, with the complete sailing team to be further bolstered at a later date when the grinders or cyclors begin full time training.

“Clearly we are very happy to have the depth of talent that we have in the sailing team right now,” notes COO Kevin Shoebridge. “The strength of our core sailing team is clear to see, there isn’t many things in sailing that haven’t been achieved by this group of guys collectively.

“After the finish of the last America’s Cup, we had an extensive and robust review of the winning campaign and how we can become stronger. Ultimately, all aspects of the organization must improve if we are to be successful again in AC37 and collectively improving our sailing team as a unit is an important aspect of this.”

Emirates Team New Zealand is well underway in its detailed planning of the sailing schedule for the 37th America’s Cup, with a main point of focus being on the months of September and October when existing teams are permitted to commence sailing in line with the rules of the Protocol of the 37th America’s Cup.

Following the publication in 2021 of the AC37 Protocol and AC75 Class Rule on November 17, the entry period opened December 1, 2021 and runs until July 31, 2022, but late entries for the 37th America’s Cup may be accepted until May 31, 2023. The Defender is to announce Match Venue and approximate event dates on March 31, 2022. – https://www.americascup.com/en/home
