2022 Sunfish North Americans

Published on June 18th, 2022

Jean Paul de Trazegnies (PER) tops a world-class international fleet of 78 competitors to win the 2022 Sunfish North American Championship in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Held June 16-18, de Trazegnies won three of the seven races to finish with a seven point margin over Chilean Ricardo Seguel Lacámara.

The first day of sailing was in winds that increased steadily from 12-15 knots to low 20s with a steep chop by the conclusion of sailing. After four races, Peruvian Caterina Romero sat atop the leaderboard followed closely by two of her countryman: former Sunfish World Champion de Trazegnies and Seguel Lacamara.

The conditions took a step too far on day two as 30-knot winds and four-foot swells cancelled the racing.

For the final day, the forecast called for winds in the mid-teens proved to be a gusty 20+ knot northerly with confused chop for the final three races. Despite a broken gooseneck and on-the-water repair, Romero delivered a strong performance.

However, the tougher conditions favored her heavier competitors and her final day’s scoreline was 8-8-(10) took her out of title contention, though she finished as the Top Female Sailor in 5th place overall.

“The regatta was really great with epic conditions,” said de Trazegnies. “The battle at the top of the fleet was really hard and it was great that my fellow Peruvian, Caterina Romero, was in that battle every race just inches away!”

Romero added, “It was harder for me today with the more wind on the course and the bigger seas. Jean Paul and I are from the same club in Peru and we train together and race a lot against each other.”
