Spanish on path toward America’s Cup

Published on September 13th, 2022

While the 37th America’s Cup will accept late entries until May 31, 2023, it will be a shocker if the field expands beyond the four teams revealed to challenge defender Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL):

• INEOS Britannia (GBR)
• Alinghi Red Bull Racing (SUI)
• Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team (ITA)
• NYYC American Magic (USA)

But that doesn’t stop outsiders from becoming insiders for the new America’s Cup Women’s Regatta and America’s Cup Youth events that will take place in one design AC40s during the 2024 Match in Barcelona, Spain.

Among the early reveals is SailTeam BCN which has been created to give a local focus to the prestigious event and has the backing of the powerful yacht club Real Club Nautico de Barcelona.

As reported by Kiwi media STUFF, the team is headed by legendary Catalan sailor Guillermo Altadill and experienced international team manager Stewart Hosford. The team will buy two of the new AC40 foiling monohulls that will be used in the youth and women’s events.

They aim to win both categories in 2024, looking to build a platform of talent and pathways to contest future America’s Cups in all categories.

“I have participated in a number of America’s Cups and the opportunity to build a Spanish team and harness the incredible sailing talent from across this country is an incredibly exciting opportunity for me,” Altadill, the team principal, said.

“As a team we will proudly represent Barcelona and our wider country to show the world that Spain is a leading sailing nation and to be home favorites in 2024. What has been incredibly impressive to me already is the amount of interest and talent that this opportunity is attracting.” – Full report
