Road to the Six Metre Worlds 2023

Published on March 6th, 2023

Held biennially, the Six Metre World Championships highlights a storied class of sleek yachts and iconic competitors. US Hall of Famers Tom Blakhaller, Carl Buchan, Paul Cayard, and John Kostecki all have their names on the perpetual.

With participation and interest in the International Six Metre Class currently running high, the 2023 World title will be hosted by Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) on August 31-September 8 in Cowes, UK.

To encourage participation across the 100+ year class history, which includes being an Olympic event from 1908 until 1952, the boats will be divided into Open and Classic divisions with teams from across Europe and North America already confirming their participation.

Several new Sixes have been built in recent years and it is anticipated that another new boat will be launched in time to join the fleet in Cowes.

“The Squadron last hosted a Six Metre World Championships in 2007, with the British Sixes regarding the RYS as their spiritual home,” noted Tom Owen, British Class Chair. “We are looking forward to welcoming our international friends for a summer of fierce competition afloat and relaxed camaraderie ashore.”

The Worlds will be the culmination of a summer of special Six Metre events in Cowes which include the British Open Championship (June 22-25) and British Classic Week (July 17-21).
