Predictions for the 2023 Transpac Race

Published on June 20th, 2023

There is a collection of 600ish nm races across the globe that get a lot of attention – Newport to Bermuda, Sydney Hobart, Fastnet, Middle Sea, Caribbean 600. They are long, but not too long, yet require seamanship, judgement, and a watch system.

But then there is the 2225nm Transpacific Yacht Race, and while it doesn’t fully cross the Pacific Ocean, the distance between Los Angeles and Honolulu is a long ways to go without being ready. Race veteran Len Bose shares a view of the 2023 edition which will have staggered starts on June 27, June 29, and July 1:

I am getting a feeling similar to what a professional football player might feel after their retirement when going into Super Bowl week. Recalling Michael Strahan’s statement, “I miss the excitement and camaraderie of the game and my teammates. I don’t miss the effort or the pain.”

Just one look at me and I have never appeared to resemble a professional football player or athlete. Although as we get closer to the starting gun for the 2023 Transpac sailboat race to Hawaii, I am missing the excitement and camaraderie of an 18-month commitment to this race.

I know better than to come out of retirement, as I am not missing the effort or upcoming pain. – Full report
