France set the bar at Olympic Test Event

Published on July 16th, 2023

The purpose of the Paris 2024 Olympic Test Event was to provide a replica of the actual event, but a year in advance. It’s a dry run for national teams, administrators, and the community, and while competition results don’t necessarily reflect future performance, there are statistics to say they do.

Here are some of the team headlines from the test event held July 9-16 in Marseille, France:

Australia: Lessons learned and bar raised at Olympic Test Event
Canada: Sarah Douglas 5th overall at the Paris 2024 Sailing Test Event
Great Britain: Five-medal haul sets British Sailing Team on path to Paris 2024
New Zealand: Kiwis left to rue mistakes on final day in Marseille
USA: Six of Ten Medal Races for USA at Paris 2024 Test Event

Here are the national results in the 10 events (Gold, Silver, Bronze):
Men’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 7: AUS, GBR, CYP
Women’s One Person Dinghy – ILCA 6: NED, DEN, ITA
Mixed Two Person Dinghy – 470: FRA, GER, ESP
Men’s Skiff – 49er: NED, FRA, SUI
Women’s Skiff – 49erFX: NED, BRA, SWE
Men’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class: FRA, GBR, SGP
Women’s Kiteboard – Formula Kite Class: FRA, GBR, USA
Men’s Windsurfing – iQFoil: FRA, GER, ITA
Women’s Windsurfing – iQFoil: ISR, GBR, NED
Mixed Multihull – Nacra 17: ITA, FIN, GBR

Gold Medals trump all, with France and The Netherlands getting the most with three. For total medals, Great Britain and France got five each, followed by The Netherlands (4) and Italy (3).

Canada had entrants for the 49er, 49erFX, ILCA 6, ILCA 7, and Women’s Formula Kite Class, with their top result from Sarah Douglas getting fifth in the ILCA 6.

“We learned a lot about the venue and how it can keep you on your toes on the water,” pointed out Douglas. “The heat will be a significant factor for Paris 2024, so it was good to be able to run through our cooling strategies here. There are still some kinks for me, the Canadian team and the organizing authority to sort out, but that’s the point of a test event.”

The USA had representatives in each of the ten events, with their top result being Daniela Moroz getting a bronze medal in the Formula Kite Class. More so, by finishing on the podium, the USA selection system will nominate her to Team USA for Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I’m excited and honored to be one step closer to representing USA at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and I’ve got my sights set on country qualification in The Hague next month,” said Moroz, noting how each country must still qualify for the Games, with the first event being the 2024 Sailing World Championships on August 11-20 in The Hague, Netherlands.

The high speed of Olympic equipment contributes to injury which impacted both USA and Canada.

Markus Edegran (USA) was sidelined from the Men’s Kiteboard event after sustaining an injury to his foot on day two. In 49erFX, the Canadian team of Ali ten Hove and Mariah Millen were in eighth position overall before the last preliminary race and in a good position to qualify for the medal race, but when Millen suffered a knee injury, they had to forfeit their last race and finished in 12th place.

Editor’s note: This report has been updated as it previously did not include The Netherlands with three gold medals.
