Celebrating 100 years of E Scow
Published on August 30th, 2023
The celebration of 100 years of E Scow sailing will culminate at the 2023 Nationals, held from September 6-10, hosted by the Mendota Yacht Club in Madison, Wisconsin.
The E Scow Class started their year-long celebration with a No Boat Regatta Ski Weekend last winter. Gary Jobson’s book, A Century of Racing E Scows, was published, and E Scow enthusiasts around North America held numerous Centennial Celebration parties, regattas, and reunions.
The regatta could be a record-breaker for One-Design single-fleet racing, with over 120 boats registered. The number of boats may exceed the legendary 1999 E Scow Invitational when 130 boats raced as one group, also on Lake Mendota.
120+ boats racing together will create an exciting start line stretching for a mile with a three-mile leg to the windward buoy. PRO Mark DeGuire and his team are ready for the challenge of effectively managing such a large number of boats. Two races per day are scheduled to maximize efficiency with the large fleet.
The MYC regatta organizers have spent three years planning the event with a focus on encouraging participation and celebration. In addition to the sailing, participants will have a busy schedule of social events.
As the class comes together to celebrate and the final pieces fall into place, the 2023 Nationals signifies a historic milestone and the beginning of another century of camaraderie, competition, and innovation in some of the world’s best sailing.
