Embracing the Olympic evolution
Published on October 17th, 2023
The Sailing Program for the 2024 Olympics endured a massive revision as half the events were changed, as the mandate was for there to be equal participation and medals for men and women, and for the equipment to promote exciting competition.
This shift has come at a cost to the sport’s history, but as this report by Around The Rings details, the Olympics are shifting:
As we reflect upon the remarkable history of the Olympic Games, change has always been a driving force. Today, we stand at the cusp of a new era, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) spearheading this transformative journey. Thomas Bach’s belief, “change or be changed,” resonates deeply with the core values of unity, respect, and excellence held by this global institution.
The Olympic Games have endured the test of time, evolving from their ancient origins, through the 19th century, flourishing in the 20th century, and now poised to redefine themselves in the 21st century. While television ratings may be shifting, this change signifies an opportunity to diversify viewership platforms and engage younger audiences while emphasizing the essence of unity that the Olympics represent. – Full report
