World Sailing suspensions remain

Published on November 22nd, 2023

When Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, they broke the Olympic Truce which began seven days before the start on February 4 of the 2022 Olympic Games, and ends seven days after the closing on March 13 of the Paralympic Games.

At the time, the International Olympic Committee urged all International Federations to relocate or cancel their sports events currently planned in Russia or Belarus, and recommended the ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from international competitions.

As an Olympic sport, World Sailing acted on the request and suspended the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in World Sailing owned and sanctioned competitions and events, and they continue to do so.

Further to the World Sailing statements in 2022 on May 24, August 23, and November 23, along with its position in 2023 on February 23, May 23, and August 29, the World Sailing Board convened on November 18 and reviewed the decision made to temporarily suspend individuals from the World Sailing Council and other World Sailing bodies.

The Board determined that there was no material change in circumstances giving rise to the suspensions. The suspensions will therefore remain in place.
